In December of 2018, Max, Maya and a few of their friends traveled to Chitwan, Nepal to participate in a volunteer project at various hospitals there. Max is interested in medicine as a career, but Maya’s interest in the project was from a more anthropological perspective. The kids shadowed doctors, observed procedures, studied case files and got to help out with patients (in non-medical tasks, obviously). Max had gone a couple of years prior and had talked it up to his buddies, so was glad to get to go again with them.
After helping out at the hospitals, the kids made a visit to a local school where they talked to young kids about oral health and showed them how to brush their teeth correctly. They handed out toothbrushes and played games with the kids.
And of course, they got to do some sight-seeing on the weekends. They took an overnight trip to Chitwan National Park where they saw lots of animals in their natural environment, and visited temples and other historic sites.
